Liam Hemsworth joins Thathangathay Foundation as Goodwill Ambassador

22 Nov 2010 1:11 PM - From LA to Arnhem Land and Wadeye local actor Liam Hemsworth knows the issues facing our indigenous community

Local actor Liam Hemsworth is keen to support the work of the Thathangathay Foundation in empowering young men from Wadeye to become strong and competent leaders.

Born in Sassafras, Victoria Liam lived with his family on a bush-block in the Dandenong Rangeseast of Melbourne. Growing up he spent a lot of time at the beach, in particular Phillip Island, with his family making a permanent move there when Liam was about 12 years old.

Liam also has strong ties to the Northern Territory, where some of his extended family lives.

At age two and half, Liam had a taste of life in an Aboriginal community,Bulman, in Arnhem Land where his parents worked for the Gulin Gulin Aboriginal Association.

He was lucky to able to return to the NT when his Year 11 Outdoor Education class visited the Wadeye community and this had a lasting impression on Liam.

"The trip to Wadeye was an incredible experience and really opened my eyes to some of the issues that affect indigenous communities.

"I’m really happy to support the work of the Thathangathay Foundation, " said Hemsworth.

Liam moved to LA at the start of 2009. He still loves surfing and spends as much time as he can in the water, although the waves near LA aren’t quite as good as Phillip Island.
